A Mischievous Coyote With A Sly Grin Coyote: How He Gets His Name

A Timeless Legend from the Heart of Native American Tradition

Among the many tales that recount his adventures, "Coyote How He Gets His Name" stands out as a particularly enchanting story that delves into the origins of his moniker.

The Wily Coyote and the Curious Bird

The tale begins with Coyote, then known as Little Boy, embarking on a journey through a dense forest. To his surprise, the bird replies, "My name is Who. Would you like to know my friend's name?" Little Boy eagerly agrees, and the bird continues, "My friend's name is You."

A Twist of Fate

Curiosity piqued, Little Boy decides to play a trick on the bird. He hides behind a tree and calls out, "Who! You!" The bird, hearing its name being called, flies down to investigate. However, it finds only an empty space.

Undeterred, Little Boy repeats the trick several times, each time the bird falls prey to his ruse. Finally, the bird realizes that it is being fooled and flies away in anger.

The Consequences of Deception

As Little Boy watches the bird disappear into the sky, he feels a sense of triumph. However, his joy is short-lived, for as soon as the bird is out of sight, a voice booms from above.

"You have played a cruel trick," the voice says. "From this day forward, your name shall be Coyote, for you are as sly and cunning as a coyote."

And so, from that day on, Little Boy became known as Coyote, a moniker that would forever reflect his trickster nature.
