Born in 1909 in the small town of Willow Creek, Alaska, Smith learned to fly at a young age. He quickly became known for his daredevil flying skills, and he soon began performing at air shows and carnivals around the country. In the 1930s, Smith joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he flew supplies to remote areas of Alaska. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the Army Air Forces, flying transport missions over the Hump in the China-Burma-India theater.

After the war, Smith returned to Alaska and began flying for commercial airlines. He quickly became one of the most popular pilots in the state, known for his humor, his love of practical jokes, and his uncanny ability to get out of dangerous situations.

In 1956, Smith was flying a group of tourists over Mount McKinley when his plane crashed. Smith and his passengers were stranded on the mountain for several days, but they were eventually rescued. The crash made national headlines, and Smith became known as the "Clown Prince of Alaska." He continued to fly for many years after the crash, and he retired from commercial aviation in 1975.

Smith died in 1983, but his legacy lives on. He is still remembered as one of the greatest pilots in Alaska history, and his stories continue to be told by pilots and aviation enthusiasts around the world.

In this book, you will find:

  • Stories of Smith's early days as a barnstorming stunt pilot
  • Accounts of his wartime experiences flying over the Hump
  • Tales of his years as a commercial airline captain in Alaska
  • Descriptions of his most daring and dangerous flights
  • Details of his famous Mount McKinley crash
