In the world of musical theater, the Tony Awards are the highest honor. But what about the shows that don't win? The ones that are just as deserving, but for whatever reason, get passed over for the top prize? In this book, I take a look at some of the most beloved and critically acclaimed Broadway musicals that never took home the Tony for Best Musical. I'll explore their strengths, their weaknesses, and why I think they deserved to win.

I've been a fan of musical theater for as long as I can remember. I love the way it can transport me to another time and place, make me laugh, cry, and think. I've seen dozens of Broadway shows over the years, and I've always been fascinated by the ones that didn't win the Tony. I've often wondered why they didn't win, and if they really deserved to.

In this book, I'll share my thoughts on some of the most notable Broadway musicals that didn't win the Tony. I'll discuss their strengths and weaknesses, and I'll give my opinion on whether or not I think they deserved to win. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

## Chapter 1: Sunday in the Park with George

Sunday in the Park with George is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. It tells the story of George Seurat, a French artist who is best known for his pointillist paintings. The musical follows Seurat as he creates his masterpiece, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," and explores the relationships between the artist, his art, and his loved ones.

Sunday in the Park with George premiered on Broadway in 1984 and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. However, it lost to La Cage aux Folles. I think Sunday in the Park with George is a masterpiece. It's a beautiful and moving meditation on art, love, and loss. The music is some of Sondheim's best, and the lyrics are full of wit and insight. I believe that Sunday in the Park with George is one of the greatest musicals ever written, and I'm still disappointed that it didn't win the Tony.

## Chapter 2: Merrily We Roll Along

Merrily We Roll Along is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth. It tells the story of Franklin Shepard, a successful businessman who looks back on his life and realizes that he has made some bad choices. The musical follows Franklin as he travels back in time to relive his past, and explores the relationships between the characters and the decisions they make.

Merrily We Roll Along premiered on Broadway in 1981 and was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. However, it lost to 42nd Street. I think Merrily We Roll Along is a brilliant musical. It's a complex and challenging work, but it's also one of the most rewarding musicals I've ever seen. The music is beautiful, and the lyrics are full of wit and insight. I believe that Merrily We Roll Along is a masterpiece, and I'm still disappointed that it didn't win the Tony.

## Chapter 3: Assassins

Assassins is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by John Weidman. It tells the stories of several people who have assassinated or attempted to assassinate presidents of the United States. The musical explores the motives of these assassins, and it raises questions about the nature of violence and the American dream.

Assassins premiered on Broadway in 1990 and was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. However, it lost to The Will Rogers Follies. I think Assassins is a powerful and provocative musical. It's a challenging work, but it's also one of the most important musicals ever written. The music is beautiful, and the lyrics are full of wit and insight. I believe that Assassins is a masterpiece, and I'm still disappointed that it didn't win the Tony.

##

These are just a few of the many Broadway musicals that didn't win the Tony. I believe that all of these shows are deserving of recognition, and I hope that this book will help to raise their profiles. IEncourage you to seek out these shows and give them a chance. You might just be surprised at how much you enjoy them.
