A Woman of Courage

Laura Secord was born in Massachusetts in 1775. At the age of 17, she married James Secord, a loyalist who fought in the American Revolution. In 1802, the Secords relocated to Upper Canada, where they settled in the Niagara region.

When war broke out between the United States and Great Britain in 1812, Laura Secord's life took an unexpected turn. American forces invaded Upper Canada and occupied several key positions, including the town of Queenston.

In June 1813, Laura Secord overheard an American officer discussing plans to attack the British garrison at Beaver Dams. She realized that she had to warn the British of the impending danger.

A Perilous Journey

Embarking on a perilous journey, Laura Secord walked for 32 kilometers (20 miles) through dense forest and treacherous terrain. Along the way, she faced numerous obstacles, including hostile Native Americans and American patrols.

Undeterred, Laura Secord pressed on, driven by her determination to protect her home and country. She eventually reached the British outpost at Beaver Dams, where she delivered her vital intelligence to Lieutenant James FitzGibbon.

The Battle of Beaver Dams

Forewarned of the American attack, the British forces were prepared to meet the enemy head-on. On June 24, 1813, the Battle of Beaver Dams ensued, resulting in a decisive British victory.

Laura Secord's heroic actions had a profound impact on the Battle of Beaver Dams. Her intelligence allowed the British to ambush the American forces, capturing over 500 prisoners and seizing a large quantity of weapons and supplies.

A Legacy of Valor

Laura Secord's bravery and patriotism earned her widespread recognition. She was awarded a pension by the British government and became a national icon.

In 1860, a monument was erected in her honor at Queenston Heights, where she had first learned of the American invasion. Today, her legacy continues to inspire Canadians, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices and contributions made by ordinary individuals during times of conflict.

The Laura Secord Chocolate Company

In 1913, almost 100 years after Laura Secord's heroic journey, the Laura Secord Chocolate Company was founded in her memory. The company produces a wide range of chocolate products, including chocolates, candies, and ice cream.

The Laura Secord Chocolate Company has become a beloved Canadian brand, synonymous with quality and tradition. Its products are enjoyed by people of all ages and have helped to spread the story of Laura Secord's heroism to generations of Canadians.

Laura Secord was an extraordinary woman who played a pivotal role in the War of 1812. Her courage, determination, and unwavering patriotism continue to inspire Canadians to this day.
