About the Author

J.R.R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. His works have been translated into at least 38 languages, and have sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.

Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, on January 3, 1892. He was the third of four children born to Arthur Reuel Tolkien, a bank manager, and Mabel Suffield Tolkien. Tolkien's father died when he was four years old, and the family moved to England shortly thereafter.

Tolkien attended King Edward's School in Birmingham, where he developed a love of languages and literature. He went on to study at Oxford University, where he earned a degree in English language and literature.

After graduating from Oxford, Tolkien worked as a professor at the University of Leeds and the University of Oxford. He also served in the British Army during World War I.

Tolkien began writing The Hobbit in 1937, and it was published in 1937. The Lord of the Rings was published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955.

Tolkien died in Bournemouth, England, on September 2, 1973.
