Captain James Stockdale was a true American hero. A Medal of Honor recipient and one of the most decorated Naval aviators in history, Stockdale's story is one of courage, determination, and resilience.

Born in 1923, Stockdale grew up in Illinois. He attended the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 1946. After serving in the Korean War, Stockdale was assigned to the Navy's helicopter squadron. In 1965, he was deployed to Vietnam, where he would earn the Medal of Honor.

On September 9, 1965, Stockdale's helicopter was shot down over North Vietnam. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war for seven years. During his captivity, Stockdale was tortured and subjected to inhumane treatment. He refused to break, however, and he even led a resistance movement among the other POWs.

In 1973, Stockdale was released from captivity. He returned to the United States a hero and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He continued to serve in the Navy, and he retired in 1980. After his retirement, Stockdale wrote several books about his experiences in Vietnam. He also became a vocal critic of the war.

Captain James Stockdale died in 2005. He was 81 years old. He is remembered as one of the bravest and most decorated Naval aviators in history. His story is an inspiration to all who value courage, determination, and resilience.
