Wallace was born in Brookville, Indiana, in 1827. He graduated from Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw University) in 1846 and then studied law. He practiced law for several years before being elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1856.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Wallace joined the Union Army. He served with distinction at the Battle of Fort Donelson and the Battle of Shiloh. In 1863, he was promoted to brigadier general and given command of the District of West Tennessee. He later served as military governor of Kentucky and provost marshal general of the United States.

After the war, Wallace was appointed governor of New Mexico Territory. He served in this position from 1878 to 1881. During his time as governor, he helped to establish the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico Military Institute.

In 1880, Wallace published his novel Ben-Hur. The novel was a huge success, selling over 2 million copies in its first year. It has been translated into over 50 languages and has been adapted into several films, including a 1959 version starring Charlton Heston.

In addition to his military and political career, Wallace was also a passionate scientist and inventor. He held over 100 patents, including patents for a new type of steam engine, a water filtration system, and a new type of concrete. He also developed a new method for making gunpowder that was used by the United States Army.

Wallace was a true Renaissance man. He was a brilliant soldier, politician, author, and scientist. He was also a man of great faith and compassion. He believed that science and religion were not incompatible, and he often spoke about the importance of both in his life.

Lew Wallace died in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1905. He is buried in the city's Oak Hill Cemetery.

Legacy

Lew Wallace was a remarkable man who made significant contributions to American history, science, and technology. His novel Ben-Hur is still one of the best-selling novels of all time, and his inventions have had a lasting impact on the world.

Wallace was a true pioneer, and his legacy continues to inspire people today. He is a reminder that anything is possible if you have the courage to follow your dreams.
