"I was born in Czechoslovakia in 1948, just a few months after the Communist Party seized power. I grew up in a small town in the countryside, and I was raised by my grandparents. My parents had been killed in a car accident when I was a baby.

I had a happy childhood, but I was always aware of the political situation in my country. My grandparents were anti-Communists, and they often talked about the old days, before the Communists came to power. They told me stories about the free and democratic Czechoslovakia that had existed before the war.

I listened to their stories with rapt attention. I dreamed of a day when Czechoslovakia would be free again.

In 1968, my dream came true. The Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia, and the people rose up in revolt. I was 20 years old at the time, and I joined the protests. We marched in the streets, and we chanted for freedom. We thought that we had finally won our freedom, but we were wrong.

The Soviets crushed the revolt, and they installed a puppet government in Czechoslovakia. The country was once again under Communist rule.

I was devastated. I had fought for freedom, and I had lost. I knew that I could not stay in Czechoslovakia. I had to escape.

I made my way through Hungary and Austria, and eventually arrived in the United States. I was finally free.

My journey to freedom was long and difficult, but it was worth it. I am now a free man, and I am grateful for the opportunity to live in a free country.

I wrote Journey for Freedom to share my story with the world. I want people to know what it was like to live under Communist rule. I want them to know that freedom is not something to be taken for granted. I want them to fight for their freedom, no matter what the cost."
