In this book, Robin Jones presents a comprehensive and engaging biography of Brunel. Jones draws on a wide range of sources, including Brunel's own writings and the accounts of his contemporaries, to create a vivid portrait of the man and his work.

Early Life and Education

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was born in Portsmouth, England, on April 9, 1806. His father, Marc Isambard Brunel, was a French engineer who had emigrated to England. His mother, Sophia Kingdom, was the daughter of a wealthy landowner.

Brunel showed an early interest in engineering. He was fascinated by machines and spent hours building models and experimenting with different designs. In 1820, he enrolled in the École Polytechnique in Paris, one of the leading engineering schools in the world.

After graduating from the École Polytechnique, Brunel returned to England and began working as an engineer. He quickly gained a reputation for his brilliance and innovation. In 1829, he was appointed chief engineer of the Great Western Railway.

The Great Western Railway

The Great Western Railway was one of Brunel's most ambitious projects. He designed the railway to be the fastest and most efficient in the world. He also designed and built several important bridges and viaducts along the line.

The Great Western Railway was a huge success. It revolutionized transportation in England and helped to make the country a leading industrial power. Brunel's work on the railway earned him international fame and recognition.

Other Projects

In addition to the Great Western Railway, Brunel also designed and built a number of other important structures, including the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Royal Albert Bridge, and the SS Great Eastern.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is one of the most iconic bridges in the world. It is a suspension bridge that spans the Avon Gorge in Bristol, England. The bridge is 1,352 feet long and 245 feet high.

The Royal Albert Bridge is a railway bridge that spans the Tamar River in Cornwall, England. It is a wrought-iron bridge that is 2,190 feet long and 100 feet high.

The SS Great Eastern was the largest ship ever built at the time. It was 692 feet long and 120 feet wide. The ship was intended to be a transatlantic passenger liner, but it was never successful in that role. It was eventually used as a cable-laying ship and as a troop transport.

Personal Life

Brunel was a brilliant engineer, but he was also a complex and driven man. He was often impatient and intolerant of those who did not share his vision. He was also a workaholic who often put his work ahead of his personal life.

Brunel married Mary Horsley in 1836. They had five children together. Brunel was a devoted husband and father, but he was also often absent from home due to his work.

Brunel died in London on September 18, 1859, at the age of 53. He is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery in London.

Legacy

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was one of the most important engineers of the Victorian era. His work revolutionized transportation and helped to make England a leading industrial power. He was a brilliant innovator who left a lasting legacy on the world.

Brunel's work continues to inspire engineers today. His bridges, railways, and ships are still used around the world. He is a reminder that engineering is not just about building structures, but about using creativity and innovation to solve problems and improve the world.
