Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1809. He grew up in poverty and had little formal education. But he was a voracious reader and had a deep love of learning. Lincoln became a lawyer and served in the Illinois legislature. In 1860, he was elected president of the United States.

Lincoln's presidency was dominated by the Civil War. The war began in 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Lincoln vowed to preserve the Union and called for volunteers to fight for the cause.

The Civil War was a long and bloody conflict. But Lincoln never wavered in his determination to win. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which freed slaves in Confederate-held territory. He also led the Union to victory in 1865.

Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865, just days after the Civil War ended. He was 56 years old. Lincoln's death was a great loss for the nation. He was a great leader who had saved the Union and freed the slaves.

Lincoln's legacy is one of courage, resilience, and determination. He is considered one of the greatest presidents in American history. His story is one that continues to inspire Americans today.
